Catholic priests and bishops around the country ready to support Immigration Reform that advocates a pathway to Citizenship for the 11 million undocumented as part of a broader effort by the Roman Catholic Church and other faith groups supporting President’s call for immigration reform.

The movement includes preaching, advertising and phone calls directed at 60 Catholic Republican lawmakers and prayer marches in certain Congressional districts. The movement is aimed at generating pressure on Catholic Republicans and Democrats wavering on their support to the reform measures. The movement is said to be inspired by teachings of the Bible and the fact that many Latin immigrants are Catholics themselves. Currently, 61 Republicans including Speaker John Boehner include the 136 Catholic members in the House.

According to Cecilia Muñoz, the director of the White House Domestic Policy Council, who is currently leading the President’s efforts on immigration, as NYTimes reports, said “It’s pretty rare for the Catholics to take on an issue like this straight to the pews.” She felt this time the Church is more organized towards advocating the overhaul.
