Pertussis, whooping cough has infected 1,935 people in Texas and could break a 50-year-old state record for the most cases in a year, according to a press release from the Texas Department of State Health Services.

The Texas Department of State Health Services said in a press release that Pertussis has infected 1,935 people in Texas and is on the verge of breaking a 50 year old state record for maximum number of infections in a year.

Dr. Lisa Cornelius, Infectious Diseases Medical Officer, Texas Department of State Health Services said that if the cases continued to be diagnosed at the current rate, the state will register the maximum cases since the 50s. She further added that since disease is highly infectious it can cause severe complications especially in infants so it needs to be taken seriously.

It is important to get vaccinated to prevent the disease from spreading especially the children who are going back to school. The health officials have asked women in the third trimester of pregnancy and infants to get vaccinated. Even immigrants need to mandatorily get vaccinated against Pertussis during their immigration medical exam.

According to the CDC, it is preventable for 70% of people taking Pertussis shots, the rest 30% may still get infected. The vaccination rate of the state is very low only 94%. This acts as a contributing factor to outbreaks of vaccine preventable contagious diseases like measles and pertussis.
