The progressive San Francisco is all geared up to introduce its own version of immigration reform. San Francisco is about to end the immigration
detention policy after the legislative proposal comes into force. According to this proposal, even if the federal government is suspicious of immigration violation, the San Francisco law enforcement would not be able to detain anyone on such suspicions on behalf of the Feds.

The proposed ordinance is under consideration this week. This implies that San Francisco would no longer co-operate with the Feds and won’t detain anyone on the basis of their immigration status.

The proposal was suggested by John Avalos, city supervisor, on humanitarian grounds as he believes such detentions promote fear in immigrant communities.

The current procedure demands that local governments collect fingerprints to immigration officials along with other information for individuals arrested on suspicions of immigration violations. This information is then forwarded to the officials who check the status and criminal background of the individual.

If the individual is discovered to be illegal and have committed a small crime, they are ready to be deported and detained while they await deportation. Last year, nearly 540 people were deported from San Francisco.
The proposed legislation has major support from the city supervisors; however, the mayor’s veto can kill it.
